    Stresses in the vicinity of an un-reinforced mitre intersection: an experimental and finite element comparison

    The experimental investigation reported provides elastic stresses in the vicinity of the unreinforced intersection of a single 90Ā° mitred bend, subjected to an in-plane bending moment. The specimen was extensively strain gauged on the outer surface. A small number of rosettes were also laid on the inside surface close to the welded intersection. The procedures used for the successful installation of the inside surface gauges are discussed. In the experiment, consideration was also given to deflections and rotations. Satisfactory comparisons with adaptive-p thin-shell finite element results were obtained in general and differences are explained in terms of the known experimental variables and finite element approximations. The nature of the stresses at such intersections is discussed and various methods of obtaining fatigue 'hot-spot' stresses are considered

    A method and apparatus is described for obtaining simultaneous tracking data from two ground stations relative to a spacecraft, and in particular for obtaining two-way range and Doppler measurements with respect to the spacecraft using only one transponder on the spacecraft. The technique employs simultaneous transmission from two stations to produce a return signal with upper and lower sidebands resulting from the interference of the two transmissions. A transponder transmits the upper and lower sidebands centered about a carrier received by both stations. One station tracks the carrier and the other tracks a sideband aided by the carrier

    A penetration apparatus, for very high temperature applications in which a base plug is inserted into an opening through a bulkhead is described. The base plug has a head shape and is seated against the highest temperature surface of the bulkhead, which may be the skin of the nose cone or other part of a space vehicle intended for nondestructive atmospheric reentry. From the second side of the bulkhead at which the less severe environment is extant, a bayonet plug is inserted into the base plug and engages an internal shoulder at about 90 deg rotation. The bayonet plug has an integral flanged portion and a pair of ramping washers which are located between the flange and the second bulkhead surface with a spacing washer as necessary

    Let a AA be the 1-skeleton of a triangulated topological annulus. We establish bounds on the combinatorial modulus of a refinement Aā€²A', formed by attaching new vertices and edges to AA, that depend only on the refinement and not on the structure of AA itself. This immediately applies to showing that a disk triangulation graph may be refined without changing its combinatorial type, provided the refinement is not too wild. We also explore the type problem in terms of disk growth, proving a parabolicity condition based on a superlinear growth rate, which we also prove optimal. We prove our results with no degree restrictions in both the EEL and VEL settings and examine type problems for more general complexes and dual graphs.Comment: 24 pages, 12 figure
